Sodium Valproate

Is the sodium salt of valproic acid, a medication that belongs to a class of drugs called anticonvulsants or antiepileptic drugs.

Treatment of various types of epilepsy, including generalized tonicclonic seizures, absence seizures, and myoclonic seizures.

Management of bipolar disorder (manicdepressive illness).

Migraine prevention.

Treatment of acute mania associated with bipolar disorder.

Treatment of certain types of headaches.

May be used offlabel for other conditions.

Torvate 750mg Tab (Sodium Valproate) works by increasing the levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, including GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter, meaning it helps to reduce brain activity. By increasing GABA levels, sodium valproate helps to prevent seizures and stabilize mood.

Store sodium valproate at room temperature, away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Do not flush medications down the toilet or pour them into the drain unless instructed to do so.

The dosage of sodium valproate is determined by your doctor and will depend on your age, weight, medical condition, and response to treatment.

Sodium valproate can be taken by mouth, typically with a meal or snack.

Do not change your dosage or stop taking sodium valproate without talking to your doctor.

Serious side effects: Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), liver failure, birth defects, suicidal thoughts or behaviors, and certain types of blood disorders.

Common side effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, drowsiness, dizziness, tremor, weight gain, hair loss, and liver problems.

Alcohol Consumption

Avoid consuming alcohol while taking sodium valproate as it can increase the risk of side effects.



While Driving or operating Machinery

Sodium valproate can cause drowsiness and dizziness, so avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how the medication affects you.



Pregnant & Breastfeeding Women

Sodium valproate can cause birth defects and other serious problems in babies if taken during pregnancy. It is not recommended for use during pregnancy. It can also pass into breast milk and may harm a breastfeeding baby.



Children

Sodium valproate is not recommended for use in children under 2 years of age unless specifically prescribed by a doctor.



Kidney

Sodium valproate is broken down by the kidneys. If you have kidney problems, your doctor may need to adjust your dosage.



Liver

Sodium valproate can cause liver problems. Your doctor will monitor your liver function regularly while you are taking this medication.
