Valproic Acid

An anticonvulsant medication that is used to treat epilepsy and other conditions.

Epilepsy: Sodium valproate/valproic acid is used to treat various types of seizures, including generalized tonic-clonic seizures, absence seizures, and myoclonic seizures.

Bipolar Disorder: It can be used to treat manic episodes in bipolar disorder.

Migraines: May be used to prevent migraine headaches.

Other Conditions: Sodium valproate/valproic acid may be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Sodium valproate/valproic acid works by increasing levels of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) in the brain. GABA is a neurotransmitter that helps to calm brain activity. This increase in GABA levels helps to reduce seizures and stabilize mood.

Store Sodium valproate/valproic acid at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.

The dosage of sodium valproate/valproic acid will be determined by your doctor based on your age, weight, and medical condition.

It is usually taken by mouth, with or without food.

Your doctor may recommend taking it in divided doses throughout the day.

Follow your doctor's instructions carefully and do not change your dosage without consulting your doctor.

Serious side effects: Liver problems, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), tremor, blood disorders, suicidal thoughts or actions (especially in children and adolescents).

Common side effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, drowsiness, dizziness, headache, hair loss, weight gain.

Alcohol Consumption

Avoid alcohol while taking sodium valproate/valproic acid, as it can increase the risk of side effects.



While Driving or Operating Machinery

Be cautious while driving or operating machinery as this medication can cause drowsiness and dizziness.



Pregnant & Breastfeeding Women

Sodium valproate/valproic acid can cause birth defects. It is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks.



Children

Sodium valproate/valproic acid can cause serious side effects in children, including liver problems, pancreatitis, and suicidal thoughts or actions.



Kidney

Kidney problems can affect the way your body processes this medication.



Liver

Sodium valproate/valproic acid can cause serious liver problems. Your doctor will monitor your liver function while you are taking this medication.
