A meglitinide, stimulates insulin release from the pancreas.
A biguanide, reduces glucose production by the liver and improves insulin sensitivity.
Type 2 diabetes mellitus when diet and exercise alone are not enough to control blood sugar levels.
Used as a combination therapy to enhance blood glucose control in patients inadequately controlled on metformin alone.
Repaglinide acts as a rapid-acting insulin secretagogue, stimulating insulin release from the pancreas in response to elevated blood glucose levels. Metformin reduces hepatic glucose production, increases insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues, and modestly improves insulin secretion. The combined effect leads to improved glycemic control.
Store at room temperature (below 30°C), away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
Dosage should be determined by a healthcare professional and individualized based on the patient's response and other health factors.
Start with a low dose and gradually increase as tolerated.
Take with meals to minimize gastrointestinal side effects.
Weight gain (though less likely with metformin)
Lactic acidosis (rare but serious, especially in patients with kidney disease)
Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar): dizziness, sweating, shakiness, confusion
Gastrointestinal upset: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain
Alcohol can increase the risk of hypoglycemia and lactic acidosis. Limit alcohol intake.
Hypoglycemia can impair alertness and reaction time. Avoid driving or operating machinery if hypoglycemic symptoms occur.
Repaglinide is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Metformin use during pregnancy and breastfeeding should be discussed with the doctor.
Not recommended for children.
Metformin should be used with caution in patients with kidney impairment due to an increased risk of lactic acidosis. Renal function monitoring is often required.
Liver function should be monitored, as liver problems can affect the metabolism of both drugs.
