Ethambutol is an antibiotic used in combination with other medications to treat tuberculosis (TB) infections.

Mycobutol 400mg Tab (Ethambutol) works by preventing the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria that causes TB. It specifically inhibits the synthesis of arabinogalactan, a vital component of the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell death and preventing the spread of the infection.

Store ethambutol at room temperature, between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F), away from light and moisture. Keep it out of the reach of children.

The dosage of ethambutol will be determined by your doctor based on your age, weight, and overall health. It is typically taken once a day, with or without food.

It is crucial to follow your doctor's instructions carefully and complete the entire course of treatment, even if you start to feel better. Stopping early can lead to the development of drug-resistant TB.

Serious side effects, though less common, can include optic neuritis (inflammation of the optic nerve, which can cause vision loss), liver problems, and allergic reactions.

Common side effects of ethambutol include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, loss of appetite, headache, dizziness, vision changes, and skin rash.

Alcohol Consumption

Consuming alcohol while taking ethambutol can increase the risk of side effects, including liver damage. Consult your doctor about alcohol consumption during treatment.



While Driving or operating Machinery

Ethambutol can cause dizziness and vision changes. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how this medication affects you.



Pregnant & Breastfeeding Women

Ethambutol can potentially harm the developing fetus. It is not recommended for pregnant women unless the benefits outweigh the risks. Discuss your treatment options with your doctor.



Children

Ethambutol is not recommended for children under the age of 13, unless specifically prescribed by a doctor.



Kidney

Ethambutol can be harmful to the kidneys. Your doctor may monitor your kidney function during treatment.



Liver

Ethambutol can cause liver problems. Your doctor may monitor your liver function during treatment.
