Metformin

Is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as biguanides.

Pioglitazone

Belongs to a class of drugs called thiazolidinediones (tzds).

Type 2 diabetes mellitus: Metformin + Pioglitazone is used to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes who are not adequately controlled with diet and exercise alone.

This combination therapy is often prescribed when monotherapy with either metformin or pioglitazone is not effective.

0 Metformin primarily works by reducing glucose production in the liver, enhancing insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues (like muscles), and slowing down glucose absorption from the gut.1 Pioglitazone improves insulin sensitivity by activating a specific receptor called peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-gamma) in fat cells, muscle cells, and the liver.

The dosage of Metformin + Pioglitazone is individualized and determined by your healthcare provider.

It is typically taken orally once or twice a day, with or without food.

It is essential to follow your healthcare provider's instructions carefully and take the medication exactly as prescribed.

More serious side effects can occur but are less common. These include lactic acidosis (a build-up of lactic acid in the blood), heart failure, liver problems, and bone fractures.

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach upset, headache, weight gain, and fluid retention.

Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of side effects, particularly lactic acidosis. It is advisable to avoid excessive alcohol consumption while taking this medication.



While Driving or operating Machinery

This medication may cause dizziness or lightheadedness. If you experience these symptoms, avoid driving or operating machinery until you feel better.



Pregnant & Breastfeeding Women

This medication is not recommended for pregnant women as it may harm the fetus. It is also not recommended for breastfeeding women as it may pass into breast milk. Discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider before taking this medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.



Children

Metformin + Pioglitazone is not approved for use in children. It is important to discuss the appropriate medications for your child's diabetes with their healthcare provider.



Kidney

Metformin can be harmful to your kidneys, especially if you have kidney problems. Your healthcare provider will monitor your kidney function while you are taking this medication.



Liver

Pioglitazone can cause liver problems. Your healthcare provider will monitor your liver function while you are taking this medication.
