A biguanide that lowers blood glucose levels by decreasing hepatic glucose production, decreasing intestinal glucose absorption, and improving insulin sensitivity.
Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults, particularly when metformin alone is insufficient to control blood sugar levels.
Linagliptin inhibits DPP-4, prolonging the action of incretins GLP-1 and GIP, leading to improved glucose-dependent insulin secretion and reduced glucagon secretion. Metformin reduces hepatic glucose production, decreases intestinal glucose absorption, and enhances insulin sensitivity. The combination provides a synergistic effect in controlling blood glucose.

Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), particularly if combined with other diabetes medications or if doses are not adjusted appropriately.
