Lamivudine

A nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (nrti) that blocks the activity of hiv reverse transcriptase, an enzyme that helps the virus reproduce.

Zidovudine

Also an nrti, it works by inhibiting the activity of hiv reverse transcriptase, preventing the virus from multiplying.

Efavirenz

A non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (nnrti) that works by blocking the activity of hiv reverse transcriptase, preventing the virus from multiplying.

Treatment of HIV1 infection in adults and children

Used in combination with other antiretroviral medications

This drug combination works by interfering with the life cycle of the HIV virus. Lamivudine and Zidovudine are NRTIs that block the activity of HIV reverse transcriptase, an enzyme necessary for the virus to replicate. Efavirenz, an NNRTI, also inhibits reverse transcriptase, but through a different mechanism. By targeting reverse transcriptase, this combination effectively reduces the amount of HIV in the body, slowing down the progression of HIV infection and delaying the onset of AIDS.

Store the medication at room temperature, protected from light and moisture. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.

Typically, this combination is taken once daily, with or without food.

Serious side effects: Liver problems, lactic acidosis (build-up of lactic acid in the blood), pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), psychiatric problems, Stevens-Johnson syndrome (a serious skin reaction)

Long-term side effects: Bone loss, heart disease, kidney problems

Common side effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, fatigue, insomnia, rash

Alcohol Consumption

Avoid excessive alcohol consumption while taking this medication.



While Driving or Operating Machinery

This medication can cause dizziness, drowsiness, and impaired concentration. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how this medication affects you.



Pregnant & Breastfeeding Women

This medication is not recommended for pregnant women, as it can harm the fetus. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
