Glimepiride

A sulfonylurea oral hypoglycemic agent that stimulates insulin release from the pancreas.

Metformin

A biguanide oral hypoglycemic agent that improves insulin sensitivity and reduces hepatic glucose production.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus, especially when diet and exercise alone are insufficient to control blood glucose levels.

Used in combination therapy to enhance glycemic control when monotherapy with either glimepiride or metformin is inadequate.

Glimepiride works by stimulating the release of insulin from the beta cells in the pancreas, thus lowering blood glucose. Metformin works through multiple mechanisms, primarily by decreasing hepatic glucose production, increasing insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues, and modestly improving glucose uptake by cells.

Store at room temperature (20-25°C), away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Discard any unused medication after the expiry date.

Typically started at a low dose and gradually increased as needed to achieve optimal blood glucose control.

Taken with meals to minimize gastrointestinal side effects.

Lactic acidosis (rare but serious): Characterized by muscle pain, weakness, shortness of breath, and abdominal discomfort.

Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar): Symptoms include dizziness, sweating, tremors, confusion, and weakness.

Gastrointestinal upset: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain.

Allergic reactions: Rash, itching, hives.

Weight gain (possible).

Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol can increase the risk of hypoglycemia and lactic acidosis. Avoid excessive alcohol intake.



While Driving or operating Machinery

Hypoglycemia can impair judgment and coordination. Avoid driving or operating machinery if experiencing hypoglycemic symptoms.



Pregnant & Breastfeeding Women

Generally not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Consult a doctor for alternative treatment options.



Children

Not typically used in children.



Kidney

Use with caution in patients with impaired kidney function, as metformin is excreted by the kidneys. Dosage adjustments may be necessary.



Liver

Use with caution in patients with liver disease. Dosage adjustments may be necessary and close monitoring is important.
