Cilastatin: A dehydropeptidase I inhibitor that protects imipenem from enzymatic degradation in the kidneys, allowing for higher levels of active drug in the bloodstream.

Treatment of serious infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including intraabdominal infections, pneumonia, gynecological infections, and urinary tract infections.

Treatment of bacterial septicemia (bloodstream infection)

Treatment of infections in patients with neutropenia (low white blood cell count).

Imipenem inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death. Cilastatin prevents the breakdown of imipenem by dehydropeptidase I, an enzyme found primarily in the kidneys, thus increasing the bioavailability and effectiveness of imipenem.

Store at controlled room temperature (20°C to 25°C). Protect from light and moisture. Discard any unused portion after the expiry date.

Usually administered intravenously (IV) over 20-30 minutes.
