Metformin

Metformin is the active ingredient in the medication.It is a biguanide drug.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus: Metformin helps lower blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes by improving the body's sensitivity to insulin.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): It can be used to regulate menstrual cycles and reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes in women with PCOS.

Preventing type 2 diabetes: It may be prescribed to individuals at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes to help delay or prevent the onset of the disease.

Prediabetes: It can be used to lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes in individuals with prediabetes.

Weight management: Metformin may be prescribed as an adjunct to diet and exercise for weight management in some cases.

Vitamin B12 deficiency: Long-term use of metformin can cause vitamin B12 deficiency.

Lactic acidosis: A rare but serious side effect, especially in people with kidney or liver problems.

Hypoglycemia: In rare cases, metformin can cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if taken in high doses or in combination with other medications that lower blood sugar.

Gastrointestinal side effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and gas.

Skin reactions: Rash, itching, and hives.

Alcohol Consumption

Avoid excessive alcohol consumption while taking metformin, as it can increase the risk of lactic acidosis.



While Driving or operating Machinery

Metformin may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If affected, avoid driving or operating machinery until symptoms subside.



Pregnant & Breastfeeding Women

Metformin should not be taken during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary. It is not recommended for breastfeeding women.



Children

Metformin is not generally prescribed for children.



Kidney

Metformin is not recommended for people with severe kidney problems.



Liver

Metformin should be used with caution in people with liver disease.
