Acarbose delays carbohydrate absorption from the gastrointestinal tract, leading to a smaller rise in blood glucose after meals. Metformin enhances insulin sensitivity, reduces hepatic glucose production, and improves glucose uptake by peripheral tissues. The combination provides a synergistic effect, leading to better blood glucose control than either drug alone.
