Glimepiride

A sulfonylurea drug that stimulates the pancreas to release more insulin, thereby lowering blood sugar.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus with hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) and hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol)

Management of blood sugar and cholesterol in patients with both conditions to reduce cardiovascular risk.

This combination drug works through three distinct mechanisms: Metformin: Reduces glucose production in the liver, improves insulin sensitivity in muscle and fat tissues, and may slightly reduce intestinal glucose absorption. Glimepiride: Stimulates insulin release from the beta-cells in the pancreas, increasing insulin availability to lower blood sugar. Atorvastatin: Lowers LDL cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol), triglycerides, and increases HDL cholesterol (“good” cholesterol) through inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase.

Store at room temperature (below 25°C), away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children. Discard any unused medication after the expiry date.

The recommended starting dose for each medication component is typically lower than when used individually. The physician will adjust the dosage incrementally based on blood glucose and lipid levels.

Medication should be taken with food to minimize gastrointestinal side effects.

Gastrointestinal upset (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain) – more common with metformin

Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) – more common with glimepiride, symptoms include dizziness, sweating, shakiness

Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol consumption can increase the risk of hypoglycemia and should be limited or avoided, especially when taking glimepiride.



While Driving or operating Machinery

Hypoglycemia or other side effects can impair judgment and reaction time; avoid driving or operating machinery if experiencing these symptoms.



Pregnant & Breastfeeding Women

This medication is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Consult your doctor immediately if pregnancy is planned or suspected.



Children

This combination is not typically used in children. Pediatric doses of individual components may be available for specific conditions under strict medical supervision.



Kidney

Metformin is contraindicated or requires dose adjustment in patients with impaired kidney function. Creatinine clearance should be monitored regularly.



Liver

Liver function tests are recommended before initiating and periodically during treatment with atorvastatin. The medication should be used with caution in patients with liver disease.
