A biguanide drug that improves insulin sensitivity and reduces glucose production by the liver.
Type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly in patients who have not achieved adequate glycemic control with diet and exercise alone.
Used when monotherapy with either glimepiride or metformin is insufficient.
Glimepiride enhances insulin secretion from the beta cells of the pancreas, while metformin increases insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues and decreases hepatic glucose production. Their combined action leads to improved blood glucose control.
Store at room temperature, away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
Dosage should be determined by a healthcare professional based on individual needs and response.
Typically started at a low dose and gradually increased as needed.
Taken with meals to reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
Gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain): More common with metformin.
Lactic acidosis (rare but serious): A build-up of lactic acid in the blood, more likely in patients with kidney impairment.
Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar): Symptoms include sweating, shakiness, dizziness, confusion.
Weight gain
Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling)
Alcohol can increase the risk of hypoglycemia and lactic acidosis. Limit alcohol intake.
Hypoglycemia can impair cognitive function and reaction time. Avoid driving or operating machinery if experiencing symptoms of low blood sugar.
Generally not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Consult a doctor immediately if pregnancy occurs.
Not indicated for use in children.
Use with caution in patients with kidney disease. Dosage adjustment may be necessary.
