Gabapentin

An anticonvulsant medication that works by regulating certain chemicals in the brain.

Amitriptyline

A tricyclic antidepressant that affects chemicals in the brain that contribute to mood, sleep, and appetite.

Treatment of neuropathic pain (nerve pain) such as diabetic neuropathy, postherpetic neuralgia (pain after shingles), and pain after spinal cord injury.

Treatment of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder.

Treatment of depression.

Treatment of migraines.

Offlabel use for restless leg syndrome, fibromyalgia, and some types of seizures.

Gabapentin works by increasing the levels of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) in the brain, a neurotransmitter that inhibits nerve impulses. Amitriptyline blocks the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine, neurotransmitters that affect mood, sleep, and appetite.

Store gabapentin and amitriptyline at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Keep them out of reach of children and pets.

The dosage of gabapentin and amitriptyline is individualized and depends on the specific condition being treated.

It is typically taken orally, with or without food, according to your doctor's instructions.

Do not change the dosage or stop taking the medication without consulting your doctor.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double the dose.

Increased risk of seizures in people with a history of seizures

Alcohol Consumption

Avoid alcohol consumption while taking gabapentin and amitriptyline as it can increase the risk of drowsiness, dizziness, and other side effects.



Driving or operating Machinery

Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how this medication affects you. Gabapentin and amitriptyline can cause drowsiness and dizziness.



Pregnant & Breastfeeding Women

Gabapentin and amitriptyline can be harmful to a developing fetus and should not be used during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks. These medications are also excreted in breast milk and may affect a nursing infant. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of taking this medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.



Children

Gabapentin and amitriptyline are not recommended for children unless specifically prescribed by a doctor.



Kidney

People with kidney problems may need a lower dose of gabapentin or amitriptyline. Your doctor will monitor your kidney function.



Liver

People with liver problems may need a lower dose of amitriptyline. Your doctor will monitor your liver function.
