Furosemide

Spironolactone

A potassium-sparing diuretic that blocks the action of aldosterone, a hormone that promotes sodium and water retention and potassium excretion.

Treatment of edema (swelling) associated with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, and kidney disease.

Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), often in combination with other antihypertensive medications.

Furosemide promotes significant diuresis by inhibiting sodium and chloride reabsorption in the loop of Henle. Spironolactone, a potassium-sparing diuretic, acts by competitively antagonizing aldosterone in the distal renal tubule, reducing sodium reabsorption and increasing potassium retention. This combination provides a synergistic diuretic effect while minimizing potassium loss, a common side effect of loop diuretics.

Kidney

Patients with impaired kidney function require careful monitoring and dosage adjustments. This combination should be used cautiously, or avoided entirely, in patients with severe renal impairment.
