Phenobarbital is the active ingredient in this medication.

Seizures (epilepsy)

Certain types of headaches

Anxiety disorders

Insomnia (trouble sleeping)

Status epilepticus (a prolonged seizure)

Preoperative sedation

Phenobarbital is a barbiturate that works by enhancing the effects of a neurotransmitter called GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). GABA has a calming effect on the brain and helps to reduce the activity of neurons that are involved in seizures.

Store phenobarbital at room temperature, away from light and moisture.

Dosage is determined by your doctor and depends on the condition being treated.

It is usually taken by mouth, but can also be given intravenously.

Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.

Do not stop taking phenobarbital without consulting your doctor.

Weakness

Impaired coordination

Slurred speech

Memory problems

Nausea

Vomiting

Constipation

Dependence (with longterm use)

Withdrawal symptoms (when stopped abruptly)

Alcohol Consumption

Avoid alcohol while taking phenobarbital as it can increase the risk of drowsiness and other side effects.



While Driving or Operating Machinery

Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medication affects you. Phenobarbital can cause drowsiness and impaired coordination.



Pregnant & Breastfeeding Women

Phenobarbital can pass into breast milk and may harm a developing baby. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of using phenobarbital during pregnancy and breastfeeding.



Children

Use with caution in children as they may be more sensitive to the effects of phenobarbital.



Kidney

This medication may need to be adjusted in people with kidney problems.



Liver

This medication may need to be adjusted in people with liver problems.
