Entacapone

Entacapone is the active ingredient in the medication.It is a catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibitor.

Entacapone is used in combination with levodopa/carbidopa (Sinemet®) to treat the symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

It helps to improve the effectiveness of levodopa/carbidopa by reducing the breakdown of levodopa in the body.

This leads to increased levels of levodopa in the brain, which can help reduce the 'off' periods (when symptoms return) experienced by people with Parkinson's disease.

Entacom Tab (Entacapone) works by inhibiting the enzyme catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT). COMT breaks down levodopa in the body, reducing its effectiveness. By inhibiting COMT, entacapone helps to increase the levels of levodopa in the brain, leading to improved symptom control in people with Parkinson's disease.

Store entacapone at room temperature, away from light and moisture.

The dosage of entacapone is determined by your doctor and is individualized based on your needs.

It is usually taken with levodopa/carbidopa, 3-4 times a day, with meals.

Do not crush or chew the tablets.

Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water.

It is important to take entacapone exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

The most common side effects of entacapone include nausea, diarrhea, and dizziness.

Less common side effects include: - Drowsiness - Headache - Dry mouth - Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice) - Dark urine - Muscle cramps

Alcohol Consumption

It is best to avoid alcohol while taking entacapone as it can increase the risk of side effects.



While Driving or Operating Machinery

Entacapone can cause dizziness. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how the medication affects you.



Pregnant & Breastfeeding Women

It is not known if entacapone is safe to take during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits before taking this medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.



Children

Entacapone is not approved for use in children.



Kidney

Entacapone should be used with caution in people with kidney problems. Your doctor may need to adjust your dosage.



Liver

Entacapone should be used with caution in people with liver problems. Your doctor may need to adjust your dosage.
