Ethambutol is used in combination with other medications to treat tuberculosis (TB), a serious bacterial infection that primarily affects the lungs.

Ecox 800mg Tab (Ethambutol) works by preventing the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria that causes TB. It does this by interfering with the production of mycolic acids, which are essential components of the bacterial cell wall.

Store ethambutol at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep it out of the reach of children and pets.

The dosage of ethambutol is determined by your doctor based on your age, weight, and the severity of your TB infection.

It is typically taken by mouth once a day, with or without food.

It is important to take ethambutol exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not skip doses or stop taking the medication early, even if you start to feel better.

Serious side effects of ethambutol are rare, but they can occur. If you experience any of the following, contact your doctor immediately:

Vision problems (blurred vision, loss of red-green color discrimination)

Headache

Nausea

Vomiting

Diarrhea

Rash

Itching

Joint pain

Muscle pain

Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet

Sudden vision loss

Severe headache

Fever

Seizures

Difficulty breathing

Chest pain

Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat

Rash that spreads or blisters

Peeling skin

Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)

Alcohol Consumption

It is generally recommended to avoid alcohol while taking ethambutol, as it may increase the risk of side effects.



While Driving or Operating Machinery

Ethambutol can cause vision problems, which may affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. If you experience any vision problems, avoid these activities until you are able to see clearly.



Pregnant & Breastfeeding Women

Ethambutol can harm an unborn baby. It is not recommended for use during pregnancy. It is also not recommended for use while breastfeeding, as it can pass into breast milk.



Children

Ethambutol is not recommended for use in children under the age of 18 years old.



Kidney

Ethambutol is eliminated from the body by the kidneys. If you have kidney problems, your doctor may need to adjust your dose.



Liver

Ethambutol can also affect the liver. If you have liver problems, your doctor may need to monitor your liver function while you are taking ethambutol.
