Tetrabenazine

Tetrabenazine is the active ingredient in medications used to treat certain movement disorders.It belongs to a class of drugs called dopamine depleters.Tetrabenazine works by blocking the action of dopamine, a neurotransmitter involved in movement control.

Treatment of hyperkinetic movement disorders, such as Huntington's disease, Tourette's syndrome, and tardive dyskinesia.

May also be used offlabel for other movement disorders, but consult your doctor for appropriate use.

Atrest 25mg Tab (Tetrabenazine) works by inhibiting the vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2) in the brain. VMAT2 is responsible for transporting dopamine into synaptic vesicles, where it is stored and released. By blocking VMAT2, tetrabenazine reduces the amount of dopamine available in the synapse, thereby decreasing hyperkinetic movements.

Store tetrabenazine tablets at room temperature, between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F). Keep the tablets away from moisture and heat.

The dosage of tetrabenazine varies depending on the condition being treated and the individual patient's response.

Your doctor will determine the appropriate dosage for you.

Tetrabenazine tablets are typically taken by mouth with or without food.

Drowsiness

Dizziness

Fatigue

Depression

Restlessness

Dry mouth

Constipation

Weight gain

Parkinsonism (tremors, muscle stiffness, slow movements)

Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol may increase the risk of side effects, especially drowsiness and dizziness. Avoid alcohol consumption while taking tetrabenazine.



While Driving or Operating Machinery

Tetrabenazine can cause drowsiness and dizziness, which may impair your ability to drive or operate machinery. Avoid these activities until you know how tetrabenazine affects you.



Pregnant & Breastfeeding Women

Tetrabenazine may be harmful to a developing fetus. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of taking tetrabenazine.



Children

Tetrabenazine is not approved for use in children under the age of 18.



Kidney

If you have kidney problems, your doctor may need to adjust your dosage of tetrabenazine.



Liver

If you have liver problems, your doctor may need to adjust your dosage of tetrabenazine.
