Epalrestat

Epalrestat is indicated for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage caused by diabetes) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Aldonil Tab (Epalrestat) is an aldose reductase inhibitor. It works by blocking the enzyme aldose reductase, which is involved in the production of sorbitol. Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol that can build up in the nerves of people with diabetes, leading to nerve damage. By inhibiting aldose reductase, epalrestat helps to reduce the accumulation of sorbitol in the nerves, which may help to prevent or slow down the progression of diabetic neuropathy.

Store epalrestat at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Keep it out of the reach of children and pets. Do not flush unused medication down the toilet or pour it into a drain.

The recommended starting dose of epalrestat is 0.6 grams per day, taken once daily.

Common side effects include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation.

Alcohol Consumption

Drinking alcohol while taking epalrestat may increase the risk of side effects. It is important to talk to your doctor about how much alcohol is safe to consume.



While Driving or operating Machinery

Epalrestat may cause dizziness or drowsiness. It is important to avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how this medication affects you.
